This is the most basic form of thermal convection, which is formed when the lower part of a fluid is heated and the upper part cooled. It is called Rayleigh-Bénard convection because Bénard demonstrated it in an experiment in 19001), and Sir Rayleigh theorized on the cause of it in 19152).
