Fridtjof Nansen


(1861-1930)
A Norwegian national hero who was an adventurer, oceanographer, politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner. His major at university was zoology.

From 1888 -1889, he crossed Greenland, and starting in 1893, he drifted in the Arctic Sea in his ship, the Fram. He didn't reach the North Pole, but he came within 400 kilometers of it.

After that expedition, Nansen was active as the Norwegian Ambassador to England, and the secretary of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
